Anti-Semitic Incident in Vienna
Simultaneously with a controversial demonstration in the city centre of Vienna, an anti-Semitic attack took place in the federal capital. The incident involved a 66-year-old passer-by having his shtreimel – a head covering worn by married Hasidic Jews – ripped off his head.
According to reports, the perpetrator, a 17-year-old Austrian, ran off with the head covering. However, thanks to the quick response of the Leopoldsgasse police station, the teenager was apprehended and reported for disorderly conduct. A witness later found the head covering in a used clothing collection box and returned it to the owner.
No Connection to FPÖ Rally
The Vienna State Police Directorate confirmed that the incident had no connection to the simultaneous FPÖ rally that was taking place in the city. The State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counter-Terrorism (LSE) Vienna will conduct further investigations if necessary to determine the motive behind the attack.
