The keyboard can connect wirelessly over Bluetooth 5.1, and for those who prefer a wired connection, it can connect via USB-C. I prefer a wired connection for keyboards that I use at my desk, so I appreciate the option here. The keyboard is charged over USB-C, and Keychron says the battery life is around 34 hours with the backlight on, or 72 hours with it off. I haven’t had a chance to test this yet, but I’ve been using it for a few days and haven’t had to charge it yet, so that’s a good sign.
There’s no dongle, so you don’t have to worry about losing that either. This makes it easy to switch between devices, which is nice. I’ve been using it with my MacBook Pro, but I’ve also connected it to my iPad and my iPhone — and it switches between devices quickly and without issue.
How does it feel to type on?
The Keychron K3 Version 3 is a mechanical keyboard, but it’s a low-profile mechanical keyboard. That means that while it offers the customization and feel of a mechanical keyboard, it doesn’t have the same extreme height as some other mechanical keyboards. That’s a good thing for some, and a bad thing for others.
The keyboard uses Keychron’s new low-profile optical switches, which are a little more sensitive than some other switches, and have a 1.8mm actuation point. The switches are also hot-swappable, so you can easily change them out if you want to. I like the feel of them. They’re relatively quiet for a mechanical keyboard, but still have a satisfying click to them.
The keyboard has a 75% layout, and while the keys are a little smaller than on a full-size keyboard, I found that I got used to the feel relatively quickly. The keys are concave, which I like, and while the keyboard is a little louder than the Apple Magic Keyboard, it’s not overly so. The keyboard is also relatively heavy, which stops it from moving around on your desk too much.
Should you buy the Keychron K3 Version 3?
The Keychron K3 Version 3 is a solid keyboard. It looks great, feels great, and offers a nice middle ground for those who like the idea of a mechanical keyboard but don’t want to deal with the extreme height of some of them. The keycaps are great, the switches are nice, and the customization options are excellent.
That said, it’s not the perfect keyboard for everyone. The keyboard is relatively loud, and it’s still relatively tall for a low-profile keyboard. If you’re looking for a super-slim keyboard, you might want to look elsewhere. That being said, for most people, this should be a great keyboard. It’s a little pricey at $79, but it’s well worth it for the quality you get.
Overall, I’ve been enjoying my time with the Keychron K3 Version 3. It’s a great keyboard, and I highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a new mechanical keyboard.
