Based on the second largest murder investigation in Sweden to date, Netflix is soon to release The Breakthrough (2025), a brand new crime series about a detective who is faced with a double murder. Based on the first images, the streaming service has just revealed the first details and the release date.

Fictional story based on a real double murder

The series is based on the double murder in Linköping, Sweden, which was finally solved after 16 years in 2004. It was a genealogist who provided the breakthrough, as for the first time in Europe a murder could be solved through genealogical research.

The new series is a fictional story about the unexpected hero, an unlikely collaboration between a detective and a genealogist, and the hunt for a killer. But, as Netflix emphasizes, “it is also a story about how an unsolved crime affects a society and what happens to people who are left behind without answers to both ‘Who?’ and ‘Why?’.”

Snabba Cash star

The series is based on the eponymous non-fiction book about the second largest murder investigation in Sweden to date, but gives it its own fictional twist. The detective is played by Snabba Cash actor Peter Eggers and the role of the genealogist is for Mattias Nordkvist, known from In Your Hands (2024). Other roles are for Morden i Sandhamn actor Julius Fleischanderl, Kandahar actor Bahador Foladi, and One and a Half Days actress Annika Hallin.
