Orwell’s most famous novel, 1984, has been adapted several times for the big screen and television, with the most recent adaptation being a 2017 television film starring Michael Stuhlbarg. However, the less well-known novels such as Burmese Days, Keep the Aspidistra Flying, and Coming Up for Air have never been adapted for film.
Despite this, Orwell’s influence on cinema is undeniable, with his works continuing to inspire filmmakers and writers to this day. The themes of surveillance, government control, and manipulation of truth explored in his novels remain relevant in today’s society, making Orwell’s work as important now as it was when it was first published.
As we celebrate the legacy of George Orwell on screen, it’s worth looking back at the adaptations that have been made and considering what other works of his could potentially make the transition to film in the future.
