Algo tiene Howard Hughes que fascina a muchos cineastas. Tiene el mismo efecto curioso que tiene el cuento de Pinocho, donde puedes ver la biografía de un director y ver que estuvo interesado en hacer una adaptación en algún momento. El magnate cineasta parece tener esa misma condición de objeto de deseo para servir de relato sobre la pasión por hacer el cine.

O quizá haya algo más detrás, al menos si observamos algunos de los nombres interesados. Warren Beatty, Michael Mann y Christopher Nolan han sondeado en el pasado la posibilidad de un biopic de Hughes (este último en concreto aún tiene el que puede ser "el mejor guion" que ha escrito), pero no fructificaron. En parte porque Martin Scorsese ya logró llegar a la línea de meta con ‘El aviador’ (‘The Aviator’, 2004).

Biopic de altos vuelos

Disponible en el catálogo de Amazon Prime Video (también gratis en Plex), este épico biopic entra en la complicada vida de Hughes y también en el Hollywood de la década de los años 20 y 30. Un fascinante retrato que podría ser un sencillo relato de amor hacia el proceso de hacer cine, aunque termina convertido en un relato sobre la obsesión a la hora de hacerlo.

Leonardo DiCaprio se encarga de encarnar a esta turbulenta figura, involucrándose en el proyecto en 1999 antes de la llegada de Martin y cuando era todavía Mann quien lo iba a desarrollar (fue reemplazado tras un par de decepciones comerciales). La película tardaría unos años más en rodarse, pero fueron claves, permitiendo a DiCaprio envejecer lo justo para seguir resultando joven pero capaz de dar el pego como adulto.

Es quizás la colaboración más clave de las realizadas por actor y director. ‘Gangs of New York’ cruzó sus caminos, e ‘Infiltrados’ (‘The Departed’) es el culmen de su sociedad (estoy dispuesto a conceder que también lo sea ‘El lobo de Wall Street’, pero qué buena es ‘Infiltrados’). Pero aquí se establece definitivamente su unión y se puede notar como ambos ajustan sus habilidades para hablar un mismo idioma, dentro de las diferencias que requiere actuar y dirigir una película.

‘El aviador’, un estudio concienzudo

Juntos parecen trabajar para enfatizar el carácter inquieto y quebrado de Hughes, manifestado en un perfeccionismo peligroso tanto en el rodaje de cine como en el pilotaje de aviones (también presentes en los rodajes), pero también manifestado en su trastorno compulsivo con la limpieza y los gérmenes. Un estudio de personaje de casi tres horas donde trastocan la imagen idílica de ese Hollywood dorado aunque mantienen cierto convencionalismo narrativo.

Este último aspecto desluce parcialmente una película que, aunque asombrosa en muchos aspectos, se siente constreñida por el formato del biopic. No cae, eso sí, en extremos aborrecibles, gracias al habitual pulso frenético de los films de Scorsese, el concienzudo trabajo de DiCaprio o la atrevida y deslumbrante fotografía de Robert Richardson que merece su propio estudio reposado. O, como mínimo, ser visto en una pantalla en condiciones.
